Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

What is FAFSA?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used by national, state, and local government agencies, as well as by universities and private organizations, to award both federal and nonfederal aid to students. This aid includes loans, grants, scholarships, and federal work-study.

Over the years, the cost of college has risen and by filing the FAFSA, families can offset some of these costs. The main purpose of the FAFSA is to award federal aid to students who demonstrate financial need. The FAFSA opens each year on October 1st; families of Seniors should submit their application as soon as possible.

Requirements to qualify for federal FAFSA money:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible noncitizen
  • Have a valid Social Security number
  • Demonstrate financial need (requirements may vary)
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress
  • Be currently enrolled in or plan to enroll in an eligible degree or certificate program
  • Have a high school diploma or recognized equivalent (such as a GED diploma or homeschooling certificate)
